<text>"Judith Slaying Holofernes" is a painting done by Artemisia Gentileschi. Although a depiction of a story already told, it reflects her own anger and frustrations during this period of her life. After confronting her rapist in a public trial where he ended up going free anyway, her work took more aggressive forms such as this.

One of the readings for this week discusses our proclivity to assert narratives onto art. We infer a before and after to the images we see. I chose this one, not for Artemisia Gentileschi's own narrative, but because there exists many possible narratives for an audience to assume came before the events of this painting, and will come after the events of this painting. These assumptions are largely influenced by our own personal experiences, our culture, and the narratives we have already consumed.</text>
