Title A name given to the resource The Cozy Log Cabin Subject The topic of the resource Housing Description An account of the resource The Cozy Log Cabin was originally built in the 1970s, but significant additions have been made over time and the structure will likely continue to evolve. In addition to being rented out via Airbnb, this building (along with others on the property) acts as dwelling, rehearsal, and performance space for musicians. The Cozy Log Cabin is constructed almost haphazardly, with multiple levels of unstained decks, rough cedar posts supporting balconies and stairs, and an amalgamation of bevel, drop channel, and log siding. The design of the cabin communicates two main ideas: creativity and human/nature interface. The Cozy Log Cabin was intended to be used by musicians and other artists, and as such was intended to reflect an artist's creativity. Richard Florida defined a number of factors involved in creativity, including self-assurance and risk-taking, subversion, dedication and hard work, and "sifting through data, perceptions, and materials to come up with combinations that are new and useful." The Cozy Log Cabin's rugged and improvisational design reflects both risk-taking and hard work (especially evoking the cultural image of the self-reliant woodsman), while its anachronism and refusal to adhere to any single architectural style demonstrates a subversive side and the capacity to recombine existing ideas into new ones. Much like the Museum Park at the NCMA, the Cozy Log Cabin plays with and provokes consideration for the human/nature interface, in both aesthetic (log siding, a tree left to grow through the deck) and functional elements (open skylight and fireplace to light/heat the living room, outdoor balconies and lounge areas). The cabin was built with sustainability in mind, and once again the design evokes the self-reliant woodsman living off the land and coexisting with nature.
