Being made of wood, rather than the chrome that is more typical of kitchen implements, makes it appear to have been brought from the past. When I bought it, the description called it vintage but I do not have the year it was made, which would have provided more insight into the authenticity of the claim of its being vintage, rather than just a mimicry. The top rolls up like an old desk, further adding to the old-timey feel of the item. It is also utilitarian in addition to its outward design. The purpose of this item is to store bread and keep it fresh, which it actually does better than a Tupperware, despite not being airtight. The bread box is an inviting addition to the kitchen as it implies the owner bakes his own bread, a somewhat whimsical thing in today's day and age.
