Description
Mario Kart Double Dash has some of the most beautiful and inviting cover art in the Nintendo GameCube library. It features recognizable faces and a scene from the game that almost makes you feel like you're on the back of one of the Karts. To me, the most unique aspect of this cover art is Nintendo's choice of Type that blends with the image. Starting from the top, Mario Kart is a division of the Super Mario Bros. brand and has a different text style than previous Mario Bros. games. Similar to the others, this text is playful and has a similar blocky shape resembling the original side scroll Mario games. However, their use of contour and beveling allows these letters to come to life. This choice was intentional because they are trying to emphasize Nintendo's new technology and the use of 3D modeling that came with the GameCube. This was something new for Mario games and although the was aspects of this technology in Mario Kart 64, this was the first time they were able to smooth edges and add textures. Bringing me to the next point which is the texture/color of the words "Mario Kart". These words seem to be colored in a red-orange to yellow gradient which reminds me of a stop light or NASCAR colors, tying together the theme of racing. It also foreshadows the abilities you are given in the game such as powersliding. You can see how the spark details under Mario and Luigi's kart are similar in color to the logo.
Underneath the words "Mario Kart", are "Double Dash". These words are easily referring to the fact that you are able to select two characters when racing in this game. It also subconsciously makes this game seem like it should be played with more people similar to how the Wii recognizes Co-op gameplay. Looking at font for these words, it is written in italics and in a serif font similar to a racing font further making this game seem like a legitimate racing game. It is attached to two streaks adding more movement to the text and making it feel like you are going to go fast when playing this game. The color of the text has another gradient but this time from grey to white making it look like a motion blur. When you look at the white contrast with the the black outline it also resembles a finish line and telling the viewer once again this game is about racing.
