Description

This image is a still from the Netflix docuseries "Don't F**k With Cats." The show premiered on Netflix in December of 2019 and is becoming increasingly popular.

What I found interesting about this documentary is that it emphasizes the surprising but large impact of the "amateur sleuths" who were using Facebook to hunt down the creator of various disturbing online videos. An important part of the film is that these amateurs are working together through a Facebook group, even though they had not met in person, to figure out the identity of the killer. While most documentaries focus on face-to-face interviews and reenactments, a large portion of the visuals in this series are screenshots/screen recordings of the conversations and posts that were shared throughout the Facebook group. This choice in design almost makes it appear as if the viewer is online themselves and interacting within the Facebook group or seeing what the "amateur sleuths" saw when they first began looking into the case. While in some documentaries viewers may dislike this choice, I ultimately found it both interesting and relevant to the topic.
