Description

This is a page from Volume I of Gibbon's unabridged Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It's a dry book, and the type mirrors that. This version uses a typical, serifed font with notes in the margins, rather than as footnotes or in an appendix. The text is justified, but the start of each chapter has a dramatic, large first letter and the letters of the first word are in small caps and spaced out. The chapters are numbered with lengthy subtitles in a font that matches the first word of the chapter. The notes are italicized. This text is portraying the dignity of the work, as the volumes are well regarded as the most complete account of the history of the Roman Empire out there. The text is solemn and serious, but dramatic in some places to maintain readers' interest.
