Description
Agnès Varda was a French film director, photographer, and artist. This piece is from a documentary titled "Visages, Villages" (Faces, Places) starring her and French artist JR. In this film, Agnès and JR travel throughout small towns in France photographing the people who reside in them. They learn the residents' stories and try to frame them in the best way possible. All of their works are images pasted on walls, houses, train cars, etc. and try to properly embody the stories behind them.
The image here is of the postman ("le facteur" is the word in French) for a small town. This is to practically immortalize his importance to the town, and during this scene he reminisces about the years when he delivered mail by bicycle and schmoozed with farmers while running his route. The way he got to know the people in the town was by delivering their mail, getting to talk to someone at every stop and making connections and forming relationships. He's an important factor in the communication of the village and his role is invaluable.
