Description

This is a picture of my microphone rig, an audio system consisting of a variety of interchangeable microphones (including the two in the picture), effects units, and mixers. I use this rig so I can quickly and easily process my vocals in real-time with my favorite equipment for compression, reverb, delay, distortion, equalization, etc., mix it with other signals (like a backing track, a midi keyboard, or other instruments), and send it all to any active or passive speakers. In addition to its functional and aesthetic design elements, the rig's design was inspired by theories of design rhetoric. The concept originated with a discursive analysis of live music performance, and in addition to its utilitarian and aesthetic functions, the microphone rig serves a rhetorical function: to call attention to the complex elements that go into a live performance which are often visually de-emphasized, as well as their relationships.
