Subject
Postmodernist Architecture
Description
This is an image of the Westin in New York. It is a hotel close to Times Square with an interesting design and irregular shape. I believe this building is postmodernist because of its irregular shape and the way it sticks out when compared to the other buildings lining this street. The design of this building is some what rectangular but has an organic line running to its peak. It also has opposing colorful lines on its sides that look like they are in a pixel art style. This building also has natural colors which somewhat blend with the normal brown buildings it stands next to. However, these blue accents allow it to stand out. It is hard to see in this photo but toward the bottom of the building there is a base made of triangles and trapezoids in shades of yellow and brown. This was one of the most interesting aspects of this building because it makes it seem like there are three unique shapes that are brought together. The brown and gray vertical buildings look as if two were pushed together and the base makes it seem like they were placed on top. I think that its shape and colors are inviting to visitors of the city and show that it is a unique place to stay. The direction of the lines on the side of the building are contrasting each other because usually vertical lines are to make something look taller and horizontal lines make it look wider. It allows this building to take on multiple personalities and cater to more people who would want to stay here.
