Description

This is a set of spiral steps that my father (a graduate of the NC State Design School) made for the pastor of his hometown church in order to get into the pulpit. Prior to these stairs, there was a single rickety plywood step and as the pastor aged, it was no longer safe to use. The Schneller piece laid out the four approaches to analyzing the rhetoric of industrial design: analysis, expert judgement, practice-based research, and lab experiments. He spent months developing and work-shopping the design of the steps, they were harder to develop than they seemed. He recognized the need for new stairs and that they needed to be very accessible. Having the staircase be spiral made it so each step could have a shorter tread without taking up so much space. He went through months of designs and prototypes before finally getting the design where he wanted it.
