The closed eyes on the planter convey a calming atmosphere, the face looks as if the person is in a spa or a Zen state. The terracotta it is made from is left in its natural brown state rather than being painted or glazed, which mirrors the soil inside and adds to the "earthy" feel of the object. The plant inside will ostensibly look like flowing hair (or an afro, or some other funky hairstyle based on the plant you decide to pot in it - mine is a vine), alluding to the concept of Mother Earth.
