Title
Technician 100th out-of-context headlines
Description
This is a page from the Technician 100th anniversary book highlighting headlines in the newspaper’s history which make readers do a double take, either because they’re funny, intriguing or just exceptionally blunt. This is an interesting feature from a contextual standpoint, as it has scanned print media into a digital format, then cut them out and placed them onto another print page absent any of the necessary context for understanding. This is because the person compiling this document has changed the purpose of the original pieces; initially, the headlines were made funny, intriguing or blunt to grab readers’ attention and point it toward the articles below. Now absent their respective articles, the headlines gain meaning with the loss of intelligibility.
The book format to isolate a newspaper medium is also an interesting lateral move; the headlines have moved from a place of prominence, at the top of an article, to an obscure location in the middle of a book, being featured themselves rather than featuring something else.
