Description
I received this book while attending a talk about mass incarceration. One of the groups that spoke was the Free Minds Book Club, a nonprofit in Washington, D.C. that hosts poetry writing workshops for incarcerated men. This book is an anthology of these men's poems.
I chose this book cover because I thought the choice of font/writing was interesting. It looks like handwriting. It is somewhat inconsistent, and it does not necessarily look like type. The size of the type also changes to emphasize the important words. For example, at the bottom of the cover, the words "Young Voices" and "Prison" are much larger than the word from. The title features similar sie differences. This is meant to draw readers attention to the essential.
This choice of font relates to the content of the book. The poems are written by amateur poets; they are not perfect, and this is not meant to be a very professional and sleek looking book. It is raw and practical, just like the poems inside.
