Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Description
This is the book cover of John Berendt's 1994 best seller, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." This true-crime novel is set in Savannah, GA, and the cover was shot in Bonaventure cemetery.
The statue on the cover is called the Bird Girl, and it was cast by Sylvia Shaw Judson in 1936. It is a young girl in a gown holding two bowls/plates in each hand that act as bird feeders To me, she represents midnight and the plates represent good and evil respectively. In the novel, voodoo is done in the cemetery; the good work happens in the half hour before midnight, while the had occurs in the half hour after midnight. The lefthand plate represents the good while the right represents the evil.
