Description
This is an untitled painting by Polish surrealist Zdzislaw Beksinski, who is notorious for his fantastic and often disturbing work. In Helmers' article, she outlined different ways that viewers participate in meaning construction, often through misreadings of authorial intention and context. These misreadings generate accidental but equally significant interpretations and meanings.
Throughout the article, I found myself referencing my own experience with this painting. I first encountered it in a collection of artwork based on cosmic horror literature, and accordingly interpreted it as having been inspired by Lovecraft's Plateau of Leng. Despite being mistaken, the historical connection I drew influenced my initial perception and continuing appreciation for Beksinski's outstanding work.
