Title

The Rose that Grew from Concrete

Subject

A poem turned photograph

Description

This is a photograph I took on my way to class about four years ago. I stopped and took a picture of it because it interested me. The existence of this plant sprouting through the cement reminded me of the poem by Tupac Shakur, "The Rose that Grew from Concrete". An otherwise mundane occurrence was made interesting (and apparently picture worthy) by a poem I read four years prior to this photo.

Additionally, the fact that I and many other people possess the ability to just take a photo when we feel like it when hit with the slightest twinge of intrigue speaks to how democratized photography has become, which is far from being a bad thing. Photographic technology provides a wonderful opportunity for professionals and amateurs alike to allow the world to see what they see, to see how they see.

"Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared."
- Tupac Shakur
