Description

This is a view of the sunset at the Cape Fear River, taken on my way out of Wilmington back to Raleigh on New Year's Eve. The Bridge is known as the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and its fairly old and unremarkable, since even before 1969 it was originally a South Carolina bridge. Its beauty is most apparent at sunset in comparison to the ww2 battleship harbored nearby that also seems to parallel the sun's descent to the river. Often to people in Wilmington its shortened to the Cape Fear Bridge or even the Port City Bridge

This picture and the beauty it represents is like a solemn pause to me by the way the river reflects the sky and makes it appear as if the bridge and this place by the river is still enough to have a full thought. The beauty is juxtaposed by the dark history of the town of Wilmington, 180 degrees in the other direction, a history fixed in the town's confederate monuments and often forgotten.

This spot is a fitting place to think about the past and the future while in the present the town faces a crisis of contaminated water that affects the whole river basin and has yet to be addressed.
